Ready to tackle one of the UK’s most iconic hikes? Buckle up and set your sights on the Yorkshire Three Peaks—a demanding but exhilarating challenge that promises stunning views and a serious sense of achievement. Hire a campervan, load up with supplies, and let’s dive into this epic adventure!

  1. Holme Farm Campsite – Horton-in-Ribblesdale
  2. Meadow Falls – Ingleton

Find your perfect camping spot and settle in. We kicked things off from Ribblehead, where you’ll find many other adventurers lacing up their boots first thing in the morning! You can walk this route any way you like – starting in Horton-in-Ribblesdale is also a popular choice.

 

Trail Directions and What to Expect:

1. Ribblehead to Whernside:

    • From Ribblehead, make your way past the imposing viaduct and follow the trainline. Skip the tunnel (it’s a sneaky shortcut to a steeper climb) and continue along the water until you spot a charming waterfall.
    • This is your cue to start the ascent. Whernside’s climb begins gently before transitioning to a mix of gravel and stone steps. Keep an eye out for a lovely tarn to your left on the way up. At the summit, cross the stile and be rewarded with sweeping views of the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. The descent is a series of cut stone steps—be cautious if it’s wet

2.Whernside to Ingleborough:

    • After the descent, meander through Philpin Farm and treat yourself to a well-deserved bacon sarnie and some of that famous orange juice. It’s the perfect fuel to gear up for peak number two!
    • Follow the road and turn left, then head through a gate and across the fields and boardwalks towards Ingleborough. This peak is the highest, so prepare for a real climb.
    • The stone steps and steep switchbacks will test your mettle. Just when you think you’re done, another stretch of climb awaits. The final scramble to the top is worth it for the spectacular views and the chance to rest if the weather is on your side.

3. Ingleborough to Horton-in-Ribblesdale:

    • The descent here is relatively gentle. Navigate through fields and follow the waymarker to Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Across the train tracks, public toilets and a pub await you in town—just remember, a pint might be tempting, but you’ve got one last peak to tackle!

4. Horton-in-Ribblesdale to Pen-y-Ghent:

    • Hit the road out of town until you see the sign for Pen-y-Ghent. This peak is a short but steep climb. Expect some scrambling, so dig deep and push through!
    • At the top, celebrate your achievement with stunning views before heading down the other side. The return to Ribblehead involves a rolling stretch across farmland. It might feel endless, but keep plodding and the sight of the pub at Ribblehead Viaduct will make it all worthwhile.

    • Epic Views: Each peak offers its own breathtaking panorama. These vistas are worth every grueling step.
    • Philpin Farm Kiosk: Refuel with a bacon sarnie and some refreshing orange squash.
