Booking a campervan
Where are Hai Campers based?
Hai Campers are based in Darlington, County Durham. Our base in the North East of England is the perfect hub to set out on your adventures to Northumberland, Yorkshire or the Lake District – and we’re only a couple of hours drive from the Scottish borders.
Darlington is on the mainline too, so it’s easy to hop on the train and we’ll meet you at the train station with your van ready to go.
Teesside Airport is also just a 15-minute drive away, and we can arrange to greet you there too.
We’ll send you full directions to our premises ahead of your trip.
Why should I book with Hai Campers?
We’re here to give you the best possible experience of van life, whether it’s for a weekend or a fortnight!
Our fleet consists of brand new, top-of-the-line VW California Ocean campervans, ensuring you travel in style and comfort.
Inside our vans, you’ll find just about everything you need for your trip, and you can personalise your experience with options for entertainment, storage and more.
Safety is our priority, so you’ll be kitted out with lane-assistance, parking sensors and a reversing camera to make driving a breeze. Plus, you’ll be covered with comprehensive insurance and 24/7 roadside assistance should you require it.
From the minute you make your booking, we’ll be on hand to help you get the most out of your experience.
How many people can sleep in the campervan?
The VW California Ocean sleeps four people – two in the pop-top, and two in the rear of the van. Both beds are doubles. There are four seatbelted seats for travel.
What are the campervans like to drive?
Our campervans are all automatic, plus they come with cruise control, lane-assist, parking sensors and reversing cameras to make driving effortless. They have a small footprint – not much bigger than a large family car – with a high driving position for great visibility, so whether you’re cruising on the motoway or traversing country lanes, you can navigate with ease.
Can I bring my pet?
Pets are part of the family! Up to two small dogs or cats are welcome in the campervans – or one larger (labrador-sized) dog. This is for your comfort, and theirs! We ask that you keep pets off the soft furnishings where possible, and charge a one-off deep cleaning fee.
What are the driver eligibility criteria?
You must be aged 30 or above to drive our campervansand have possessed your driving licence for more than two years.
All drivers must be present when collecting the vehicle and a driving licence check is compulsory. You must provide a driving licence and 2 documents confirming the your name and current address.
See our terms and conditions for full details of who can drive our campervans.
Can we share the driving?
Yes – there’s a fee of £50 per hire for additional drivers, and we will need to see all the same documentation as the main driver, including driving licence and utilituy bills.
Planning a trip
Where can I leave my car while on my holiday?
You will be able to leave your car at our premises while you are away. It will be parked in our secure facility, out of public view. There is no charge for this, but, we cannot be held responsible for your vehicle whilst you are away.
Will you be able to suggest places for us to visit?
We are happy to offer you advice on where to travel in your campervan! We suggest you book your campsites at a similar time to your campervan in order to secure a pitch. Once you know roughly where you’d like to go, feel free to drop us an email and we’ll provide you with some ideas for nearby attractions and activities.
What do I need to take with me?
We’ve kitted out our campervans with most things you’ll need for a stress-free holiday, including cutlery and crockery, pots, pans and cooking utensils.
We don’t include bedding (except for the custom-sized fitted sheets) and personal towels – though you can buy Dock & Bay quick-drying microfibre towels during the booking process.
Other than that, you just need to bring your clothes, toiletries and food – read our comprehensive packing guide for suggestions.
Can I camp off-grid?
Our campervans hold 30 litres of fresh water, a 2.75 kg gas bottle and around 60 hours of electricity when fully charged – although this of course depends how you use it! This is enough to camp off grid comfortably for short periods.
Before heading to the wilderness to wild camp, it’s important to check the rules!. Across the majority of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, campers have no legal rights so check before you camp, or get the landowner’s permission. Some sites in Scotland require campers to get a permit so do your research before you go.
